Cosic Dental is dedicated to you and your child’s total well-being and dental health, just like our name states! We are thrilled to announce we now offer the Healthy Start System for children. This comprehensive approach to dental management ensures your child’s teeth are correctly aligned as they come in while establishing healthy sleep habits that can last a lifetime.
What is the Healthy Start System?
The Healthy Start System is a proactive, preventative approach to orthodontic care designed to help guide your child’s jaw development and teeth placement as they grow and their permanent teeth erupt. At the same time, it helps children with Sleep Disordered Breathing break unhealthy breathing habits such as mouth breathing, leading to better rest, improved health, and a lifetime of healthy sleep habits.
A series of safe and comfortable mouthpieces are designed for your child that they use when sleeping. Your child will breathe better and sleep more soundly because the mouthpiece helps widen the airway while they sleep. New mouthpieces are custom-crafted to your child’s teeth and gums as your child grows. The Healthy Start system also helps prevent crooked teeth as adult teeth emerge and may prevent the need for braces or aligners in the future.
What is Sleep Disordered Breathing?
Sleep Disordered Breathing in children is usually the result of an underdeveloped mouth and jaw. As a result, the nasal passages and upper airways are constricted when sleeping or lying down. This leads to interrupted sleep and insufficient oxygen.
When a child does not get enough oxygen or is sleep-deprived, they often develop behavioral problems, including an inability to concentrate, irritability, and aggressiveness. They also may grind their teeth, snore, and wet their beds because they are unable to breathe. Nasal breathing is also critical for the production of nitric oxide, which is critical for overall growth and wellness.
Straighten Teeth Without Braces
Another significant benefit of the System is the chance to straighten your child’s teeth as they come in rather than straightening them after the fact. When children are young (3-7 years old), the tissue around the roots of their teeth is soft and loose. The Healthy Start System uses this time to guide the teeth into the proper position, gently shifting them over time.
As children get older, the tissues around the roots of the teeth become tighter and make it more challenging to move already misaligned teeth. Proactively correcting potential problems when your child is young is the best approach to straight teeth.
Does My Child Need the Healthy Start System?
Many children benefit from the Healthy Start System, including those with Sleep Disordered Breathing, restless sleep, or problems with bedwetting. The Healthy Start System can also straighten teeth without braces, eliminating the embarrassment and discomfort of wearing braces as a teen or young adult. At Cosic Dental, our motto is From Dentistry to Well-Being. Healthy Start is exactly this. We are excited about offering this safe, effective System for children in order to improve their overall health.
If your child suffers from any of these problems, the Healthy Start System can help:
- Sleeping or breathing problems, especially at night
- Teeth grinding
- Nightmares or restless sleep
- Sleeping with an open mouth
- Crooked permanent or baby teeth
- An underdeveloped upper or lower jaw
Benefits of the Healthy Start System
The benefits of the Healthy Start System are many. Some of them will be apparent almost immediately, including more restful sleep. Other advantages may become apparent over time, including straight, beautiful permanent teeth without braces. It also helps correct various issues commonly associated with Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB), including ADHD, daytime fatigue, restless sleep, irritability, and difficulty in school.
