Ozone Therapy in Rockford IL
Dr. Dunja Cosic Carlson, Dr. Vanja Cosic, Dr. Pamela Schmidt and Dr. Roger Schmidt have attended and participated in seminars to be able to provide ozone therapy for our patients. Dr. Pamela Schmidt is a member of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology. Why is this important news? It’s important because we are able to treat infections and viruses in a way that is conservative and holistic. No drugs or prescriptions.
Understanding Infection Control in Dentistry
One of the most complex and perplexing problems in dentistry today is infection control. The oral cavity is a sea of microorganisms normally living in balance with the entire human body. Under certain conditions, pathogenic or “disease-causing” microorganisms can become the dominant life form, creating what we call an infection. These organisms live together and are supported in a biofilm, which can be a mixed-type infection made up of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and even parasites. The difficulty is that each of these “disease-causing” types requires a different drug to eliminate its dominance.
How Ozone Therapy Works to Eliminate Infection
We are excited to announce that we can now treat all of these “disease-causing” microorganisms and at the same time support the surrounding healthy tissue without side effects and without drugs! How does this work? When ozone is introduced into the system, it creates what is called a “transient oxidative burst”. The infective organisms have no natural defense against this reaction, and, as a result, are overstressed and die. Thus, ozone disinfects the area treated, both safely and effectively.
Safety and Side Effects of Ozone Therapy
You may wonder if you can be allergic to ozone or if there are any side effects. No, it is impossible to be allergic to ozone. Ozone is just an energized form of oxygen. When used in our office and delivered to the patient in gas, water, or oil form, the by-products of the ozone treatment are oxygen and water.
How We Use Ozone Therapy in Our Office
Our water lines are sterilized with ozonated water throughout our office, ensuring the cleanest and safest environment possible. Ozonated water runs through our handpieces and air and water syringes. We use ozone gas when preparing teeth for fillings and crowns, ensuring a clean and disinfected field to place a new restoration. We utilize ear and nasal insufflation to help with other conditions such as ear infections and sinus problems.
We are very excited about the advancement we have made in treating our patients holistically.
